After separating from the larger state of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand was formed on 9 November 2000 as the 27th state of India. The state shared borders with Tibet, Nepal, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh. Uttarakhand is a northern Indian state consisting of 2 administrative divisions i.e. Garhwal and Kumaon. There is a total of 13 districts in these 2 divisions. For the Garhwal administrative division the headquarters is in Pauri and for the Kumaon administrative, the headquarters is in Nainital.

  • The district of Uttarakhand is headed by a District Magistrate, it is his responsibility to look after the law and order situation in each district of the state.
  • A Deputy Conservator of Forests from the office of the Indian Forest Service is responsible for monitoring the state of forests in the region.
  • A Superintendent of Police is responsible for the management of the police force in the state.
  • The literacy rate of Uttarakhand as per the 2011 census is 79.63% with 88.33% literacy for males and 70.70% literacy for females.

Proposed District Of Uttarakhand 

When Uttarakhand was created as a new state, it has 13 districts. No new district is create till now but from time to time people, the chief minister, MLA, and MPs have proposed to form a new district.

  • In 2011, BJP proposed to form 5 new districts that were Ranikhet, Roorkee, Kotdwar, Yamunotri, and Didihat. The proposed Uttarakhand District List are:
    1. Ranikhet from Almora district.
    2. Roorkee from the Haridwar district
    3. Kotdwar from Pauri Garhwal district.
    4. Yamunotri from Uttarkhasi district.
    5. Didihat from Pithoragarh district.
  • In 2016, INC (Indian National Congress) plan to form 6new districts that were Kashipur, Roorkee, Rishikesh, Gairsain, Ramnagar, and Narendranagar.
    1. Kashipur, from Udham Singh Nagar district.
    2. Roorkee, from Haridwar district.
    3. Gairsain, from Chamoli district.
    4. Rishikesh, from Dehradun district, Tehri Garhwal district, and Pauri Garhwal district.
    5. Narendra Nagar or Pratapnagar, from Udham Singh Nagar district with headquarter at either of the two places.
    6. Ramnagar, from Nainital district.
  • There is a demand for forming a new district i.e. Gangotri, Chakrata, Haldwani, Dharchula, Karnprayag, Tharali, Tyuni, Thalisain, Ghastoli, Meelam, Dugtu, Syaldey, Munsiari, etc.
