Narendra Nagar History
When Narendra Shah, King of Tehri Garhwal, relocated his capital from Tehri to a more picturesque location in 1919, the town of Narendra Nagar was born. The village became famous amongst the British Viceroys in the early 1900s. The Palace ‘Anneze’ was expressly created in the ancient royal structure in 1910 to give a nostalgic stay to visiting Viceroys and their entourages.
Several notable people, including former Indian Prime Ministers Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi, as well as the last British Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten of Burma, have visited the royal palace.
The reigns of Tehri Garhwal passed from King Narendra Shah to the final Maharaja, Manabendra Shah, in 1914. When India gained independence, the Tehri Garhwal province united with Uttar Pradesh state (now Uttarakhand state).
