Bhootnath Temple is a Hindu temple located amidst forests in the Swargashram area behind the Parmarth Niketan Ashram in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is situated on the banks of the holy river Ganga.

This temple is so famous because it is the place where Lord Shiva rested when he planned to marry his wife Sati.

Bhootnath Temple is 7 storied and it is surrounded by Rajaji National Park on three sides. The entire city is visible from this temple along with the greenery. The main shrine is the smaller shrine on the top floor. From the top floor you will have an amazing panoramic view of Rishikesh.

On its first floor, the description of the stories related to Lord Shiva has been engraved through pictures. Each floor of the temple depicts deities associated with Nandi, Hanuman and Lord Shiva.

The procession of the ghosts of Lord Shiva is also depicted through paintings on the seventh floor. Rishikesh, Ram Jhula, Laxman Jhula, Parmarth Niketan Muni Ki Reti, Sivananda Ashram can be seen from the top floor.

History of Bhootnath Temple

Bhoothnath Temple is considered to be one of the oldest temples in Rishikesh and has a rich history attached to it. Bhootnath Temple is known for its beauty and strangeness but this temple is making headlines because of its strange and spiritual-mythological significance.

According to legends, this temple is said to have a story related to the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati. Legends say that this is the place where the procession of Lord Shiva halted when he was on his way to marry his first wife, Sati. So Lord Shiva spent the night here along with all the deities, ganas, ghosts and all the animals in his procession.

The temple also has idols of other deities such as idols of Goddess Saraswati, Lord Kalabhairava and others.

Another story associated with this temple is that Lord Shiva himself appeared in the form of Bhootnath to save Rishikesh from the demons who were creating chaos and destruction in the region. The temple was then built at the place where Lord Shiva appeared.

In 1952, the Swami Kailashanand Mission Trust built the Bhootnath Temple at this place.
