The legend tales of Kalpeshwar relate that following the slaughter of the Kurukshetra battle, the Pandavas embarked on a pilgrimage to ask forgiveness from Lord Shiva. They looked everywhere, but they could not find the lord. After numerous failed attempts, Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, was able to identify Shiva, who had taken the avatar of a bull(Nandi). 

When Bhima tried to aggressively grab the bull by its tail and hind legs, it became submerged in the dirt. Later, its body pieces emerged in various locations. According to legend, the ‘Jata,’ or Shiva’s locks, emerged in Kalpeshwar.

Previously, a 10-kilometer trek path existed from Helang to Kalpeshwar via Urgam village. But now that jeepable roads connect Helang and Urgam, it is only a 1-kilometer journey to Kalpeshwar.

Best Time To Visit Kalpeshwar Temple

The travel to Kalpeshwar Temple may be done at any time of year, but the best time to visit is between October and May. Travelling here during these months is the most pleasant and fun. The weather here is frigid throughout the winter season. The temperature here drops dramatically during the winter season due to snowfall on the neighbouring hills. It is a bit difficult to move out of here during the rainy season due to strong rainfall-threatening landslides.
