According to the Indian epic Mahabharata, the Pandavas sought Lord Shiva in order to find salvation following the carnage of the Kurukshetra war. But when the stubborn Pandavas spotted Shiva in the Guptakashi hills, they made an effort to restrain him by using his tail and legs.
But the bull disappeared, and Lord Shiva made a surprise appearance at five different locations in the Garhwal region. Following the appearance of the hump in Kedarnath, the arms in Tungnath, the stomach and navel in Madmaheshwar, the face in Rudranath, and finally the head and hair in Kalpeshwar.
