Malari is a small village in Chamoli district on the Indo-Tibetan border near Joshimath. Malari hamlet, located at 3048 meters in the Dhauli Ganga valley, is surrounded by high snow-covered mountains.  Malari is a lovely ancient Himalayan village with distinctive architecture and slate roofs on the old dwellings. The route from Malari leads to Niti Village/Niti Pass, near the China/Tibet border.

Some Interesting Facts About Malari Village

Due to severe snowfall, residents of Malari hamlet relocate to the lower Himalayas during the winter. After the winter finishes, during the month of April, Malari residents return to the hamlet and restart their lives. Malari is 60 km from Joshimath and on the way to Niti village. 

Malari is home to primarily Bhotia tribes, whose main vocations include sheep raising and pulse farming. Knitting was a popular pastime among women. Dronagiri mountain, Nanda Devi shrine, Nanda Devi National Park, Joshimath, and Tapovan are popular tourist destinations near Malari. Malari is also on the way to Niti village, the last village.

Activities One Can Do in Malari

Apart from the natural beauty, Malari is a little hamlet in the most distant area of the Chamoli district, hence there is not much sightseeing or places of interest to visit. However, one may catch a view of the spectacular Himalayan peak of Dronagiri, which is supposed to be the location where Lord Hanuman Ji brought Sanjivani to heal Laxmana. Niti village is one of the last villages before the Indo-Tibetan border.

Trekking: There are several villages in and near Malari where one might go on a walk with friends. Niti village, located 18 km from Malari, is the final settlement on the Indo-Tibetan frontier.

Village Tourism: Malari is one of Uttarakhand’s least-known hamlets and one of its most distant settlements. One may visit the lovely village and learn about their rustic way of life, customs, and beliefs. The Indo-Mongolian Bhotia tribes live in the hamlet.  

Accommodation in Malari

Malari is one of the most distant communities on the Indo-Tibetan border, thus finding accommodation may be challenging. Malari has a limited number of low-cost lodging options. Trekkers visiting Malari should have camping equipment because there are no guesthouses and they will have to sleep out in the open.

Malari has no restaurants or dining establishments other than a few tea booths that serve snacks. Keep in mind that Malari is more of a migratory settlement that remains under deep snow in the winter. In addition, if you can find a roadside dhaba offering Pahadi meals, you may enjoy traditional Garhwali food. Keep in mind that Malari does not have any fancy restaurants.

Best Time To Visit

Although many recommend visiting Malari between April and June, and August and September. However, if you talk to villagers and army personnel, they will highly advise you to visit shortly after the monsoon, which is around the end of August. The foliage thickens and the mountains become opulent! The valley is extremely beautiful at this time of year!

How To Reach

To go to Malari Village, you must first get to Joshimath. The trip from Joshimath to Malari is 60 km, and it is particularly picturesque and steadily growing. The trip will take you from familiar lush green Himalayan peaks to noticeably diverse rock formations. If you are lucky, you could see some Himalayan wildlife along the way, like Himalayan Thars, Musk deer, mountain goats, and possibly snow leopards.

By Road:- From Rishikesh, one may travel to Joshimath. However, you should be prepared to encounter some traffic at certain times.

By Train:- The train is another possibility for a portion of the route. Malari village is 350 kilometers from Dehradun Railway Station and 310 kilometers from Rishikesh Railway Station. To go to Joshimath, you will be able to take cabs, both shared and private. To travel to Malari, from Joshimath you will need to take a different cab.

By Air:- The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, which is 327 km from Malari village. The airport has convenient access to major Indian airports.
