Nakuleshwar Temple is a famous religious place, situated at a distance of 10.5 km from Pithoragarh town and 2.7 km from Shilling village. The word Nakuleshwar is made up of two words – Nakul and Ishwar. The Nakula statue of Mahishasur Mardini refers to the mighty Himalayas and “Ishwar” is the Hindi word for “God”.

Hence, it collectively refers to the deity of the Himalayas (Lord Shiva). The temple was built in the Khajuraho architectural style and houses 38 stone images of various Hindu deities including Shiva-Parvati, Uma-Vasudev, Nauvarga, Surya, Mahishasura Mardini, Vamana, Kurma and Narasimha. ,

According to a legend, this temple was built by two Pandavas, namely Nakula and Sahadeva (mythical characters from the Hindu epic, Mahabharata).
