Binsar Uttarakhand

Binsar

The peaceful valley of Binsar is one of the picturesque areas in Uttarakhand’s Kumaon region. Binsar, located at an elevation of 2420 meters, is noted for its breathtaking vistas of spectacular Himalayan peaks such as Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, Panchachuli, and Kedarnath. Binsar’s major draw is the 300-kilometer-long spectacular and panoramic vista of Himalayan peaks from the Binsar Zero point.

The Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, which serves as a sanctuary for rare animals, birds, and floral species, surrounds this tiny hill town. Because of the dense greenery, it is unquestionably the ideal location for adventurous trekking, camping, and nature hike.

Binsar History

Binsar was the summer capital of the Chand Dynasty, which reigned over Kumaon from the 11th to the 17th century A.D. The site proudly displays the ancient Shiva temple known as Bineshwar Mahadev, which was constructed in the 16th century A.D. by Raja Kalyan Chand of the Chand dynasty. People used to come from far-flung villages, hiking on trails they had made, to pay respect to Bineshwar Mahadev.

Binsar Mythology

Binsar derives its name from the words ‘bin-sar,’ which literally means “without the head.” According to a popular local tale, there was once a tremendous battle between the King of Binsar and Golu Devta, the local deity. However, owing to skepticism, Golu Devta was decapitated, and his trunk fell at Gairad Dana Golu near Binsar National Park, while his head fell at Kaparkahan near Binsar Uttarakhand. Both of these locations contain ancient temples dedicated to Golu Devta.

Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary

Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, established in 1988, covers 45.59 km2 and is rich in vegetation and animals. BirdLife International has designated the sanctuary as an ‘Important Bird Area’ because it is home to over 200 species of birds, including Forktail, Blackbirds, Laughing Thrush, Kalij Pheasant, Nuthatches, Parakeets, and Monal.

Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to 200 bird species, as well as the Barking Deer, Himalayan bear, leopard, fox, musk deer, langur, porcupine, flying squirrel, chital, and jungle cat.
