The garden also houses a collection of several vulnerable plant species that are native to the range region, thus attracting the attention of conservationists from across the country.

There are many such plants here, which have the ability to cure many diseases like ‘snake maize’ which proves effective in burns or wounds. Chirayta, Riddhi, Kairu are also present here, which help in reducing fever and toxin.

Why to visit Himalayan Botanical Garden

The main reason for setting up this garden is to give information about plant species found in Uttarakhand. Many plants have become extinct due to lack of information. Emphasis has been laid on preserving many plants in this Botanical Garden, so that people, trainees and students coming here can get information about it.

Forest beat officer Arvind Kumar told that plants seen in natural habitat are present in the entire Botanical Campus, which has different medicinal properties. Along with this, more than 100 such species have been preserved, which are for tourists and students to see and understand.

Garden has two types of houses to attract tourists.

It houses a fashionable collection of orchids, ferns, cactus, trees and aquatic flora from the Uttarakhand region. Major attractions of the garden include a butterfly park, companion orchidarium, library, fernery, herbarium, Thunia alba orchid, geodesic dome, waterfalls, cactus garden, bamboo hut, etc.

Types of Garden in Himalayan Botanical Garden

The botanical garden is controlled by the Forest Department of Uttarakhand. The Forest Department has developed a cactus garden and a bamboo hut at the botanic Gardens for the promotion of tourism in the region. These two facilities were inaugurated in 2011.

Cactus Garden –

The Cactus Garden is housed in a very clear dome that is designed in such a simple way that it gathers the most sunlight to protect the plants from frost and the harsh weather, especially in the winter season. The recently developed Cactus Garden houses a unique collection of rare and delightful cactus plants.

The Cactus Garden is the first of its kind in the Uttarakhand region with more than ninety species of cactus plants, which are collected from completely different places, to provide a unique experience to the visitors of the garden.

Bamboo House –

New bamboo huts have been built for the visitors so that they can stay and relax in a calm and serene environment away from the noise and busy life of the cities.

The Bamboo House not only provides a unique experience to the visitors, but also helps in popularizing the use of bamboo as an alternative building material that is cost-effective as well as eco-friendly. This may also have the potential of marketing employment opportunities for the local residents of the area.
