One of the main attractions of Ranikhet, Jhula Devi Temple is an 8th-century temple, situated in Chaubatia Garden and at a distance of 7 km from the city center. Located in the Kumaon Himalayan range of Uttarakhand, Jhula Devi Mandir is highly regarded by devotees from all over the world.
The presiding deity of the temple, Lord Durga, is seated on a wooden swing (Jhula), thus, it is called ‘Jhula Devi Temple’. According to the local people, the main deity of the temple, Goddess Durga, protects them from wild animals. People even say that even after many years of its construction, the blessings of the Goddess continue to shower. Despite being a forest area full of animals like leopards and tigers, the area remains accessible to the local people.
Pilgrims come to Jhula Devi Mandir to ask for wishes and tie a bell. When their wish is fulfilled, they again come to the temple to express their thankfulness to the Goddess and again tie a bell. The place is calm, quiet, and serene. This place is an excellent place for meditation and introspection.
History Of Jhula Devi Temple
Jhula Devi Temple is an ancient temple situated amidst vast serene hills, on the way from Ranikhet to Chaubatia, and has a great history. The temple was about 700 years old and the present Jhula Devi temple complex was constructed in 1935. The innumerable bells hanging on the premises testify to the healing power of Maa Durga aka Jhula Devi.
According to legend, ages ago Chaubatia was a dense forest, inhabited by many wild animals including leopards and tigers. They used to harass the villagers by snatching their cattle. The poor villagers prayed to Maa Durga and requested her to get rid of the distress. The goddess told a cowherd in his dream to dig at the specified place to find an idol and build a temple for the idol at that place. The villagers followed his instructions and got rid of the wild animals, so the fearless children played on the swings.
Seeing those merry-making kids, Maa Durga wished to have her own swing. So she again appeared in the dream of a villager and asked him to give her a swing. Devotees made her sit on a wooden swing in the sanctum sanctorum and since then she came to be known as Mata Jhula Devi.
