Kausani is a hill station located in the Bageshwar district of Uttarakhand, 51 km from Almora. The panoramic snow-capped view of the Himalayas at Kausani is dominated by the Trishul, Nanda Devi, and Panchuli peaks. Nestled at an altitude of 1890 meters amidst forests of pine trees, and meandering creeks, Kausani is ideal for honeymooners, nature lovers, and travelers.

History Of Kausani

In ancient times Kausani was known as Valna. The town became famous in 1929 when Mahatma Gandhi made the village his temporary residence to complete his works on Anasakti Yoga. This place is also famous for the great Hindi poet Sumitranandan Pant. Mahatma Gandhi termed Kausani the “Switzerland of India” because of its natural beauty. Initially, the city was inhabited by Kumaoni and Garhwali communities and was a part of the Almora district. In November 2000, Uttarakhand was carved out as a separate district and Kausani became a part of it.

Someshwar, Kausani

Today, it attracts large crowds of tourists and has been converted into a study, research center, and museum with an accommodation facility with 24 rooms. A place of great historical importance, the ashram also has provision for a kitchen and a library.

Starscapes Observatory

Kausani, high in the majestic Himalayas of Uttarakhand is the magical Starscape Observatory, a gateway to the mystical Milky Way. It is a dedicated site for observing celestial objects such as the Moon, planets, star clusters, constellations, nebulae, distant galaxies, and other deep-sky objects.

Sumitranandan Pant Museum

Sumitranandan Pant Museum is a place with artistic taste and a whole new world in itself. Dedicated to the famous Hindi poet who was born in Kausani, it displays a wide range of his creative works ranging from manuscripts of poems and draft work of his literary works to his awards and letters written by him. A large collection of his books in English and Hindi are displayed in glass cabinets. Every year a poetry discussion is organized in the museum to celebrate his birth anniversary.

Kausani Tea Estate

It is a place where one will feel very close to nature and is heaven for tea lovers. Kausani Tea Estate, located 5 km from the main city, is spread over an area of 208 hectares. The place also arranges a short tour to show you the manufacturing process guided by their own staff. One can taste and buy different flavored teas from there. Other than that it is a wonderful place to take a walk but keep in mind not to visit from November to March when it is closed.

Rudradhari Falls and Caves

At a distance of 12 km from Kausani, surrounded by paddy fields and green deodar forests, is the mesmerizing Rudradhari Falls. The secrets of ancient caves can also be discovered near the waterfall, located on the trekking route to the Adi Kailash region. According to legend, this place is related to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The Shiva temple of Someshwar is situated near the waterfall.

Gwaldam

A beautiful, quaint, and sleepy village nestled between Garhwal and Kumaon, Gwaldam is a place straight out of a fairy tale. The place is full of forests and small lakes which provide a setting for a peaceful retreat. Trek to Pinnath

A perfect way to rekindle your spirits, Pinath can be reached through a trek of just 5 km from Kausani. Known for its temple, this place provides a feeling of bliss when surrounded by nature’s forest.

Best Time To Visit Kausani

The hill station of Kausani is at its best during April-June and October-February. However, its geographical location, situated on a densely vegetated ridge, plays an important role in attracting many tourists from April to the end of June. The climate thus remains pleasantly cool during the day, allowing tourists to explore the hill station. Winters from October to early February are also an ideal time as the temperature hovers around 9°C, making daytime sightseeing a pleasant experience.

By Road:- It has regular bus services from neighboring states to Uttarakhand. If you are traveling to or from Delhi, private buses also ply from there. Two routes can be availed from Delhi which cover a distance of approx. 433 km and 405 km each.

By Train:- Kathgodam is the nearest railway station to Kausani at a distance of 132 km. Well connected to other major cities like Delhi, Lucknow, and Kolkata, there are frequent trains to the region. Buses or taxis can be easily availed from Kathgodam to the required destination.

By Air:- Pantnagar Airport serves as the nearest airport to Kausani, approximately 162 km away. Taxis to the city are easily available from outside the airport. However, the nearest major airports are Dehradun and New Delhi.
