Khurpa Taal is a beautiful lake located in the Khurpatal area on the outskirts of Nainital hill station which is a distance of 11 kms from Tallital Bus Stand. It is Situated at an altitude of 1635 m. The lake is known for its pleasant climate and crystal clear water thus it is considered ideal for fishing and abundance of freshwater fish. It is like a secret heaven on earth which is still to be explored by the nature and peace lovers. The area is well covered with tall trees and the roads connecting it to Nainital city are flanked by these trees which create travel problems.

Khurpatal has a unique specialty. Actually this lake is famous for changing its color. The lake of Khurpatal is also known as the ‘mysterious lake’. Sometimes this lake changes its color throughout the year.

The local people believe that the color of this lake gives an indication of the future, such as – light red color, a sign of impending disaster. 

In the month of March, its color becomes dhani, which according to the people here is a symbol of prosperity. In the month of March-April, flowers of pines fall here, due to which there is a slight change in the color of the lake. Green color is also felt in it due to the shadow of the trees.

Although there are many beliefs behind these colors, but there is also a scientific fact behind it. Actually there are about 35 to 40 types of species of algae present inside the lake. When the algae leaves the seed, different colors appear in it due to the rays of the sun.

How To Reach

By Road:- Several private and government buses are available from ISBT Dehradun and ISBT Anand Vihar Delhi to Nainital, Haldwani and Kathgodam. Both AC and Non AC buses are available from Delhi to Nainital. 

By Train:- Kathgodam Railway station is the nearest railway station which is 36km away from Nainitaal. There is an abundance of bus and taxi service from the railway station to the Khurpataal.

By Air:- Pantnagar Airport is the nearest airport to the Khurpa Taal. You can hire a private or shared taxi from the airport which will take around 2 to 3 hours to reach the taal.
