Lansdowne History
Lansdowne, known as the “Home of the Garhwal Rifles,” is one of Uttarakhand’s most charming and untouched hill stations. Lansdowne was named after Lord Lansdowne, who served as Viceroy of India from 1888 to 1894. Lansdowne now houses the command office of the Indian Army’s Garhwal Rifles division.
Locals used to refer to Lansdowne as ‘Kaludanda’ or “Kalu Danda” settlement, which literally means ‘Black Hills’. However, Lord Lansdowne, then Viceroy of India (1888-1894), created Lansdowne in 1887 and owes the credit for its development and name.
When the first battalion of the Garhwal Rifles moved from Almora to Lansdowne on November 5, 1887, the British established the town as a cantonment and established a Garhwal Rifles Recruits Training Centre. Lansdowne was a nexus for all significant efforts carried out by British Garhwal independence fighters during British rule.
The Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army now have their command office at Lansdowne. Even now, tourists to Lansdowne can admire the rustic houses, churches, and ancient pubs that tell the unsung colonial history of British rule and remind them of the pre-independence time.

How To Reach
By Road:- Lansdowne is well connected by motorable highways to the main Uttarakhand state sites. Buses to Kotdwar and Dugadda depart frequently from ISBT Kashmiri Gate. Buses and taxis to Lansdowne are available from Kotdwar, Dugadda, Pauri, and other important Uttarakhand locations. Lansdowne is accessible by National Highway 119.
- Route 1: From Delhi to Meerut 70 kms, Mawana 30 kms, Bessuna-Ramraj-Meerapur
- Route 2: Take the Right turn from here for Bijnor-Kiratpur 16 kms, Najibabad 17 kms, Kotdwara 25 kms, Dogadda 15 Kms.
- Route 3: 2 km from Doggada there is a T Junction. Take the RIGHT Turn on Lansdowne Road (the left turn goes to Pauri).
