Maya Devi Temple, Haridwar is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Maya in the holy city of Haridwar in the state of Uttarakhand in India. Goddess Maya is the presiding deity of Haridwar. She is a three-headed and four-armed goddess who is believed to be an incarnation of Shakti. It is believed that the heart and navel of Goddess Sati fell in the area where the temple is located today.
Haridwar was earlier known as Mayapuri in reverence of this deity. The temple is a Siddha Peetha which is a place of worship where wishes come true. It is one of three such Peethas located in Haridwar, the other two being Chandi Devi Temple and Mansa Devi Temple.
The temple is also known for its elaborate decorations and festivities during the Navratri festivals and the Kumbh Mela. The temple complex houses the idols of Goddess Maya, Goddess Kamakhya and Goddess Kali. Apart from being a sacred place of worship, the temple is known for its ancient architectural beauty.
The architecture of Maya Devi Temple
The ancient Maya Devi Temple is also one of the three oldest temples in Haridwar that is still intact, the other two being the Narayan-Shila and the Bhairav Temple.
All three are still standing today and not destroyed by time or environment, and have flourished as centres of pilgrimage, blessings and worship.
Built with traditional North Indian architecture, it is a small temple with stucco images depicting various postures of the goddess. The inner shrine of the temple has three idols, Goddess Maya in the centre, Goddess Kali on the left and Goddess Kamakhya on the right.
There are two other goddesses in the temple as well, and both are believed to be forms of Goddess Shakti. There is also a metal idol of Chamunda and a sub-shrine of Sheetla Devi. It is said that the goddess fulfils wishes and desires when prayed with love and complete devotion.
History of Maya Devi Temple
The Maya Devi temple came into existence in Haridwar in the 11th century. This reveals the ancient glory attached to this famous Maya Devi shrine of Haridwar. Devotees throng this holy temple in Haridwar to worship the presiding deity. Maya Devi resembles the form of Goddess Shakti in the temple and hence people worship this divine power.

Chandi Devi Temple – Chandi Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Chandi Devi, about 5 km from Har Ki Pauri. She is also the presiding deity in the east of Haridwar. Pilgrims and visitors say that a visit to Haridwar is incomplete without a visit to Chandi Devi.
Mansa Devi Temple – The temple is situated on the top of the hill at a distance of 3 km from Har Ki Pauri Ghat. Devotees often take stairs to reach the temple, but there is a cable car service to reach the temple. She is a highly revered and worshipped goddess in Haridwar where wishes come true. Devotees and tourists from all over the country and the world come here to pay homage to Goddess Mansa Devi and seek her blessings.
