Ram Jhula is one of the most famous places in Rishikesh. It is an iron suspension bridge over holy river Ganga. The length of the bridge is around 750 feet. It was constructed in the year 1986, by the PWD.

The bridge connects the Sivananda Nagar area of Muni Ki Reti in Tehri Garhwal district to Swargashram in Pauri Garhwal district crossing the river from west to east. This bridge is approximately 3 kilometres away from the main town of Rishikesh.

Although similar in design, this bridge is longer than the Lakshman Jhula which is 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) upstream of the river. Motorbikes are allowed to run on this bridge. Several holy ashrams and Hindu religious centers and temples can be seen on the sides of the bridge.

Construction of Ram Jhula

The famous Ram Jhula was initially a bridge made of very strong jute ropes, which were tightly intertwined to give it strength and help it bear the weight of passers-by. It initially had no pillars to provide structural support.

It was rebuilt with iron in the year 1986 by the Public Works Department under the supervision of the government.

What is the History of Ram Jhula in Rishikesh

The name of the bridge is derived from the Aryan king- Lord Rama- the hero of the epic Ramayana. The other famous bridge over the river is the Lakshman Jhula.

The story is that during the reign of Rama, Lakshmana crossed the Ganges with the help of two ropes. These bridges are a gesture of sibling love and camaraderie between the two brothers- Ram and Lakshman.
